Someone asked me something today, which I still can't answer!
The question was "do you prefer salad cream or mayonnaise?" And it's a really tough question, because I like salad cream in sandwiches, but I also like mayonnaise mixed with mustard in sandwiches. In my pre-food intolerance days, my fave sandwich was : cheese, tomato, beetroot and saladcream. yum yum
Salad cream is good with chips (if no brown or tomato sauce), but then so is mayonnaise! Both are good on pizza and on salads...
Talking of brown sauce & tomato sauce - I can't decide on them either - sometimes I want brown sauce on my veggie sausage/ bacon sandwich, and sometimes I want tomato sauce!
Ohhhhhh why do I have to choose????? I hate questions like this!

Ahhh, the old salad cream versus mayonaisse debate. Well many would argue that salad cream is the poor man's equivilant to it's creamier, snow white cousin. The more common cited argument is that the intense flavours embodied within the salad cream compound tend to overpower the delicate flavours of it's namesake dish. Many salad cream lobbyists however, insist this is merely propaganda put forth by French activists who stand to lose profits in the event of the demise of the eggy emulsion. The versatility of salad cream is somewhat undermined by the use of the word 'salad' in its name. This is to some extent exploited by underground salad cream users who like to experiment with the sauce, but want to keep such activities out of the mainstream, as they are arguably paranoid that if such experimentaion became popular amongst the masses it may enduce a decline in their cult status and sense of community. Mayonaisse users however, in a Microsoft-esque manouvre, are trying to create a monopoly across all dishes whether or not their pairing with mayonaisse produces an appropriate and pallateable flavour combination. Whilst it is true that salad cream can overpower the likes of meals such as salad, its punch means that it has a much more inherent ability to stand up to meals with stronger flavours. This is a trait which mayonaisse sorely lacks. Mayonaisse's creaminess, however complements subtle flavours, and can create dishes of it's own in the form of 'egg mayonaisse' or 'tuna mayo', which is an achievement salad cream can boast less success in. Therefore the conclusion, and indeed answer to the question, after careful reflection and acquired insight, is that they are both nice.
This is obviously a very thought provoking subject.
I wasn't aware there was an "underground" movement behind mayo and salad cream... blimey, that means there's probably a Mayo Anonymous group somewhere too!!!
How freaky!
I'm in awe of Wayne. Wayne have you got the letters MSC after your name? (mayonnaise/salad cream expert)
